In-group favouritism appears to be a phenomenon largely connected to degree of religiosity. In North America, Christianity happens to be the largest demographic religion. It's not true in every case empirically, apparently, where ethnic ties can mean more.

Atheists are very strongly disliked over pretty much every other group in North America, particularly American society. It is a much different - more negative - social and cultural landscape for them, and has been much different for a long time. These are the numbers when things have gotten better for them.
